Welcome to New Zealand! You’ll be met at Auckland Airport and hop on a quick 45 minute flight up to the gorgeous Bay of Islands. Your first New Zealand experience is New Zealand’s most important site of historical significance, where New Zealand’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed by Maori chiefs and European representatives of the Crown. This afternoon you can choose between an active option of kayaking, biking or hiking, or relax and simply wander the lovely seaside towns of Paihia and Russel. You’ll get to know your travel mates at your welcome dinner together.
Golden beaches, secluded coves, tranquil harbours, warm waters, dramatic coastlines and spectacular forests are your playground for today. You’ll choose from sailing, kayaking, and snorkeling among the islands, walking Kauri forests, horse trekking* and diving*. The choice is yours. With many restaurants within walking distance you’ll be free to select your own dining for lunch and dinner.
This morning you’ll visit picturesque Matakana, a small village of boutique shops, galleries, cafes, and a thriving Farmer’s and local Crafter’s Market. You’ll have time to wander this lovely village, do a little shopping, and find a perfect lunch spot. You’ll continue to Auckland in the afternoon and our timing couldn’t be better – it’s Auckland Pride! You’ll cheer on the parade this evening and appreciate how we show our pride down under!
You’ll enjoy a full day Maori cultural tour today. You’ll see the famous Haka War Dance at the Auckland Museum. You’ll walk among unique indigenous trees and plants, learning their Maori names and importance as both food and medicine. You’ll hear lore and legends of the bush. You’ll visit our west coast with it’s black sand beaches, windswept cliffs, and roaring surf.
Fly to Christchurch (1.5hrs). This morning you’ll journey to the glorious South Island. Glacier fed turquoise lakes and mountain vistas adorn our drive to Mt. Cook today. We’ll stop at Lake Tekapo, renowned for its stunning beauty. We’ll reach Mt. Cook village in time for an afternoon stroll with views of Mount Cook and the surrounding native alpine forests.
Relax and absorb the peaceful mountain views, or explore the region with an easy 3 hour guided hike along the Hooker Valley floor, surrounded by mountain and glacier views, and alpine summer wildflowers.
After lunch amidst this majestic setting, we’ll travel (2.5hr) further south to the lakeside town of Wanaka. Often called the world’s first lifestyle reserve, Wanaka boasts unbeatable scenic vistas, a quaint shopping area, and relaxing lakeside cafés and restaurants.
Today’s tour with our local guides will take us on a jet boat ride on glacier fed waters up the Matukituki river, past waterfalls, into Lord of the Rings film locations. In addition to the fun action, you’ll enjoy peaceful stops, hear native birds, and experience the native forest on a nature walk, all the while hearing stories of the natural forces that created this unique landscape. Then you’ll enjoy exclusive 4WD access to a high country sheep farm, with wide open mountain and lake views all around. Photographers will be in their bliss.
We’ll bid a slow farewell to Wanaka this morning and cross over the highest main road in New Zealand, the Crown Range road, towards Queenstown (1hr).
We’ll stop in Arrowtown, a quaint historic gold mining town filled with cafes, restaurants, galleries and boutique shops. You’ll have plenty of time to wander around this lovely town.
Just when you thought the scenery couldn’t get any more spectacular, wow, Queenstown! This evening you’ll enjoy a vineyard tour and dinner.

Today is a free day. You can relax in gorgeous Queenstown for the day, or choose from the previous day’s options again, at additional cost. On your final night, you’ll savour the splendid views above Queenstown from a gondola ride before we enjoy our final dinner together. We’ll watch the sun go down over the mountains and share stories of our favourite moments of the trip.
After breakfast we’ll say our farewells. Depending on your departure time, you’ll have the day to do whatever you choose. Maybe it’s picking up a few mementos for family or friends in the array of shops in Queenstown. Or maybe it’s one last visit to another vineyard! If you’re flying out today, we’ll arrange for you get to the airport safely. If you think you want to stay on, we can arrange that for you too. And you’ll probably be already talking about your next trip to the land of the long white cloud, Aotearoa.

You will be charged a wire transfer fee by your bank, so this option is only worthwhile if you can pay in full, or in no more than three installments. Final payment is due 90 days before arrival in New Zealand (November 18, 2016).
Cancellation notice must be delivered to New Zealand Awaits in writing and be acknowledged by New Zealand Awaits in writing. The cancellation fee is determined by the date the written cancellation notice is received by New Zealand Awaits. New Zealand Awaits reserves the right to cancel this trip at any time for any reason. This includes if insufficient reservations are made for a trip, or if New Zealand Awaits believes the quality of the trip or the safety of our guests would be compromised. In such cases, all monies received will be refunded 21 days before the scheduled departure of the trip. This refund will constitute full and final settlement. New Zealand Awaits is not responsible for any loss incurred on account of non-refundable or non-transferable air tickets or other unrecoverable travel costs. We recommend travel insurance to cover such eventualities.
New Zealand Awaits will not pay any discounts or refunds for missed or unused services (activities, Accommodation, meals or any other unused service) which were missed or unused by the Client due to no fault of New Zealand Awaits or its suppliers. This includes any termination of the Client’s participation in the trip due to the Client’s own fault, negligence or breach of these terms.
If an itinerary needs to be changed due to unforeseen circumstances, New Zealand Awaits will make every effort to keep the route as close a possible to the original and to use similar high quality Accommodation and/or activities. These changes are at the discretion of the Trip leader/guide and any costs incurred as a result will be the responsibility of the Client.
